Scented Varnishes

Varnishes Enhance the Sweet Smell of Success

These amazing scented varnishes with encapsulated fragrance can be applied to conventionally and digitally printed pieces as well as labels and packaging projects. The scented varnishes we use are totally translucent, unlike their pasty predecessor “scratch and sniff” and are applied during the printing process so the cost to use these on your printing projects can be more than offset by the increased response rates these special effects will yield. There are dozens of ready stocked scents available (see below) with thousands more that can be formulated for your unique scented requirements. For stocked scents please add about one week to your typical job turnaround. Check with us first to make sure a particular scent is in inventory. For scents that are out of stock, or for custom scented varnishes, please allow an additional three to five weeks for manufacturing and the approval process.

Scented varnishes with encapsulated fragrance can be used for good, bad or recognizable effects. For example, we’ve used a chocolate scent for a pleasant sensory enhancement to a selfmailing, diecut brochure to play off of a decadent chocolate themed design. Keep in mind on selfmailers, to stay within postal regulations, it’s important to keep the scented surfaces inside the finished, folded piece and not exposed to the outside surfaces where it can be unintentionally activated. A smoke (fire place) scent can be used effectively for a fire prevention campaign, where it’s not necessarily a pleasant smell, but one that can evoke a sense of warning, fear and awareness. These awareness campaigns are also very popular with utility mailers to educate the public about natural gas leaks. We’ve used coconut/suntan scent on a package to promote a conference that was held in Coconut Beach, FL for a national trade association event. It’s a recognizable smell that may be pleasant, but you sure know what it is and evokes thoughts of being at a beach.

By transforming print into a multi-sensory medium, scented varnishes will increase the impact, recall, value, and effectiveness of your marketing efforts. When combined with the right creative, scented varnishes can enhance the messaging and user interactivity and engage the user for a longer period of time to let your message or call to action really sink in.

If you would like to get a sample of any of the stocked scents below, or would like a printed sample from a live piece we’ve produced, please contact us. We would be happy to consult and collaborate with you to see if a scented varnish would be beneficial and impactful on any of your future projects.
